We started our campervan journey the wrong way round and first spent a couple of years holidaying in the UK in a touring Caravan. This was due to Ellen’s steadfast belief that she wouldn’t find a campsite with Bathroom facilities of the required standard.
Ever frustrated by the restrictions of towing at 70 mph and the hassle of setting up and packing away after each trip I eventually I managed to talk/coerce her into the idea of a campervan. After much research and discussion we purchased our first VW California.
We took delivery in May 2012 and a few weeks later set off on a 2500 mile trip of France, Italy and Spain. This maiden voyage was to embody the very spirit of Campervan life.
We embarked Eurotunnel at Folkestone with our friends in their California following closely behind.
As the train departed we all piled into one vehicle with a map and a weather report and picked our first destination. The following week was a new destination and discovery each day, only planned over a meal and glass of wine the night before. If we didn’t like the weather in one place or had a particular yearning to visit somewhere then we simply let the van take the strain and headed off to wherever our imaginations took us.
Its fair to say that after that first week Ellen was hooked and on returning home just in time for the 2012 Olympics we had the last minute idea to park up on the side of the road at Box hill and watch the world’s best cyclists race past us on their way to London.
Several years later and now onto our second California we have been lucky enough to tour large parts of France, Germany, Austria and Corsica in both summer and winter as well as the magnificent beaches of Cornwall and highlands of Scotland. We have made lots of friends along the way and Ellen has discovered campsite bathrooms that rival those in 5 star hotels! As keen Motorsports fans we have attended several events at Silverstone circuit, the 24 hour race of Le Mans as well as the Festival of Speed at Goodwood and the California is truly at home in any situation.
The VW California has been the essence of so many good memories and experiences for us and our loved ones that we had the idea to develop EXPLORE campervans. As the name suggests we want to help anyone considering the adventure that is Campervanning. Be prepared though, you will fall in Love. Our aim is to use our knowledge and experience to provide you with everything you need to go EXPLORE.
